The Vancouver Jazz Orchestra with guest Champian Fulton
Established in 2022, the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra (VJO) has quickly become a prominent fixture in the Vancouver music scene. Led by Executive Director, Cory Weeds and Artistic Director, James Danderfer, the VJO’s goal is to uphold the rich tradition of jazz while exploring new horizons. Their performances showcase Vancouver and area’s many exemplary, established local professionals as well as up-and-coming jazz talents, along with world-renowned guests artists. With a repertoire that spans everything from classic big band standards to contemporary compositions, they not only highlight the city’s rich musical past, but connect that legacy to new works and future voices of the music. Since inception, the VJO has commissioned new works and performed with some of the biggest names in Jazz. Along with a range of other activities, they are paving the way for a vibrant future for jazz in Vancouver. The promise of brilliant concert experiences for Lower Mainland audiences is exemplified by this evening’s concert.
Joining the VJO for this special performance is Champian Fulton. Called “a charming young steward of the mainstream Jazz tradition” by Nate Chinen of The New York Times, Fulton has also been recognized as the “most gifted pure Jazz singer of her generation” by Mark Stryker of the Detroit Free Press. Born in Norman, Oklahoma in 1985, Champian began her career at the age of 10, performing for Jazz legend and family friend Clark Terry’s 75th Birthday Party. Now a Jazz pianist and vocalist for more than 20 years, she’s released 18 albums as a leader, (and 2 as a duo with Cory Weeds), and has performed in more than 25 countries. Fulton has been recognized with numerous awards, including Album of the Year in the NYC Jazz Record (2018, 2020, 2023) and Pianist and Vocalist of the Year (2019) by Hot House Magazine. Now an integral part of the dynamic NYC jazz scene, she’s performed with a range of Jazz royalty to great, and increasing, acclaim. As said in All About Jazz, “Champian does everything astonishingly well.” “Every song is a work of art in Champian’s hands and voice”, says Aboslute Sound. Her “galvanizing presence” (the New Yorker), especially in a collaboration with the illustrious Vancouver Jazz Orchestra, promises an exciting and truly memorable night of Jazz at the Shad.
